Iimoriyama Castle

CultureVisit: ~120 minFree

Visitors can explore the ruins of an extensive mountain castle from the Sengoku period, on the summit of Mount Iimori. The site, which extends about 700 metres north to south and 400 metres east to west, preserves numerous defensive enclosures (kuruwa), dry moats (horikiri) and earthen bridges (dobashi). A distinctive feature is the use of stone walls (ishigaki) in many of these enclosures, built with stones stacked almost vertically, some on several levels. These walls are considered an early and valuable example, predating those of Azuchi Castle. The place was the power base of Miyoshi Nagayoshi, who ruled the Kinai region from here and played a key role in the politics of the Muromachi shogunate. It is said that he was buried temporarily in the enclosure called Gotai-zuka Kuruwa on his death in 1564. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 2021 and selected as one of the “Continued 100 Famous Japanese Castles” in 2017.
