The largest church in Christendom, in Vatican City, was built in the 16th century over the ancient Constantinian basilica, with designs by Bramante, Michelangelo and Maderno. Its dome, designed by Michelangelo, dominates the Roman skyline. Inside are Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's bronze baldachin over the high altar. In front opens the square with Bernini's colonnade.
