Place Vendôme

CultureVisit: ~30 minFree

The Place Vendôme is a historic square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, located north of the Tuileries Garden and east of the Madeleine church. Its classical architecture was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1699, with uniform façades of Corinthian pilasters and chamfered corners giving it an octagonal shape; most of the façades are listed as historic monuments. At its centre stands the Vendôme Column, erected in 1810 by Jacques Gondouin and Jean-Baptiste Lepère and inspired by Trajan's Column, with a helical bas-relief of bronze plates. The square has been known since the nineteenth century as one of the epicentres of luxury in Paris, with renowned jewellers such as Cartier, Chaumet, Mauboussin, Van Cleef & Arpels and Boucheron, as well as luxury hotels such as the Ritz. At number 11–13 is the Ministry of Justice, in the Hôtel de Bourvallais, since 1718. Visitors can walk around the square, admire the column and the façades, and note the spot at number 12 where Frédéric Chopin died.
