Nanzen-ji
CultureVisit: ~60 min
Zen temple of the Rinzai school founded in 1291 by Emperor Kameyama, on the lower slopes of Higashiyama. Its great Sanmon gate looms over the grounds, and on the site there is a Meiji-era brick aqueduct, called Suirokaku, which has become one of the most photographed images of Kyoto. It is surrounded by sub-temples, dry gardens and deciduous trees, which turn red in autumn. It is located east of the centre, near the Philosopher's Path.
