Tuskulėnai Manor
Tuskulėnai is a neoclassical estate in the Žirmūnai district. On the site of a former royal estate from the 16th century, the present manor was built in 1825 to a design by Karol Podczaszyński, commissioned by the governor-general Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov. Between 1944 and 1947, the basement of one of its outbuildings was used by the Soviet secret police to carry out death sentences; excavations in 1994-1996 found the remains of hundreds of people. Today it is a branch of the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights. Within the grounds there is a columbarium chapel where the victims of the Soviet regime rest, a 7.5-hectare peace park with ponds, St Theresa's Chapel and the White House. The permanent exhibitions are "Project HOMO SOVIETICUS", in the manor, and "The Secrets of Tuskulėnai Manor", in the basement of the White House, which explains how sentences were carried out. The White House also preserves a 17th-century kiln where bricks were fired for the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
