Church of Our Lady of Remedies
The Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is on Plaza de San Francisco, in the old town of Estepona. It was built in the late 18th century as the church of the Franciscan convent, on the site of the old hermitage of the Veracruz, with donations and labour from the townspeople. In 1835 the friars were expelled under the confiscation laws and the church became a parish church. In 1936 its archive and works of art were burned, and the current altarpiece was installed in 1993. The doorway mixes Marian, Franciscan and pre-Columbian elements: a round arch with the monogram of Mary, sun, moon and stars, masks with Native American features and a Franciscan coat of arms with a plaque dated 1772. The tower has four tiers and a two-tone ceramic zigzag crown between four pinnacles.
