Church of San Salvador
San Salvador stands in Campo San Salvador, on the Merceria, the commercial axis linking Rialto with St Mark's. It was consecrated in 1177, but the current building was begun around 1508 under Giorgio Spavento and continued by Tullio Lombardo, Scamozzi and perhaps Sansovino. It is a hall church made up of three Greek crosses in a row, each with its own dome and lantern. The Baroque façade is by Giuseppe Sardi, from 1663. Inside is Titian's Annunciation, in the right-hand aisle, and his Transfiguration over the high altar, which covers a silver altarpiece from the 12th century. There are also funerary monuments such as that of Doge Francesco Venier, by Sansovino, and that of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, who died in 1510. Next to the church the Sansovino cloisters of the former monastery survive.
