Darro
The River Darro crosses Granada from north-east to south-west and its open-air urban stretch, 653 metres long, runs between the Alhambra and the Albaicín, skirting the Carrera del Darro and the Paseo de los Tristes. Along this route four historic pedestrian bridges survive: the Muslim ones of Aljibillo and Chirimías, and the Christian ones of Espinosa and Cabrera, both from the 16th century. Since at least the 13th century its waters have supplied the Royal Canal of the Alhambra, which feeds the pools and fountains of the monumental complex. The river's name evokes the search for gold in its sands, an activity that continued until the mid-20th century. Since 1835, the final stretch of the channel has been buried beneath the city centre, with an underground course of 1,267 metres.
