San José Cemetery
A 19th-century municipal cemetery on the Generalife estate, next to the Alhambra, covering about 110,000 square metres across 19 courtyards and declared a Site of Cultural Interest. It descends from the Barreras cemetery, opened in 1805 during a yellow fever epidemic. It is run by the municipal company Emucesa. The first courtyard has family mausoleums and sculptures, including the tomb of Ángel Ganivet. The second, the Patio de los Ángeles, holds the Rodríguez Torres mausoleum, with a Christ to which many of the faithful attribute miracles. The third has a Romantic aesthetic. The San Cristóbal area occupies the site of the Nasrid estate of Los Alixares. In the San Juan courtyard is the Espacio Memoria de Granada, with the sculpture Piedad by Eduardo Carretero, a remembrance of those shot against its walls during the Civil War and the dictatorship. Those buried here include the flamenco singer Enrique Morente.
