Grassi Museum
The Grassi Museum is a museum complex in Leipzig housing three museums: the Museum of Applied Arts, the Museum of Ethnography and the Museum of Musical Instruments. The building, constructed between 1925 and 1929 in Art Deco and New Objectivity style, has several interior courtyards and stands next to the park of the old Johannis Cemetery. The Museum of Applied Arts is regarded as one of the leading design museums in Europe and shows temporary exhibitions of craft, design, photography and architecture of international standing. The Museum of Ethnography holds one of Germany's largest ethnological collections and examines the history of its own collection. The Museum of Musical Instruments, part of the University of Leipzig, displays more than 9,000 objects tracing the evolution of European musical instruments from the Renaissance to the present day. On the third floor, the GRASSI Himmel offers Thomas Moecker's walk-through sculpture 'Offene Stadt', with views over the museum's rooftops towards the city centre. The complex also includes a café and a museum shop.
