Victory Column

The Victory Column (Siegessäule) is a 66.89-metre-high monument on the Großer Stern, in Berlin's Tiergarten park. It was designed by Heinrich Strack to commemorate Prussian victories in the wars of unification and is topped by an 8.52-metre gilded statue of Victoria, popularly known as Goldelse. The monument stands on a base of polished Swedish granite with four bronze reliefs depicting scenes from the victories. Above the base is a circular hall with 16 granite columns and a glass mosaic, and four sandstone columns decorated with gilded cannons. A spiral staircase of 285 steps leads to a viewing platform with panoramic views of Berlin. The column was moved to its current location in 1938/1939 and survived the Second World War. It is a major tourist attraction and a symbol of the city.
