Straße des 17. Juni
The Straße des 17. Juni is a central Berlin avenue that runs east to west through the Tiergarten park, from the Brandenburg Gate to Ernst-Reuter-Platz. Along its route stand the Victory Column (1874), on a roundabout in the middle of the park, and the Soviet War Memorial (1945), the only large structure between the gate and the column. The street was renamed in 1953 to commemorate the uprising of 17 June 1953 in East Berlin. Throughout its history it has been used for parades, as a runway during the Second World War and, today, is a popular recreation area and the starting point of the Berlin Marathon. It also hosts mass events such as the Love Parade, Live 8 and the 2006 World Cup Fanmeile, and every New Year's Eve it gathers more than a million people for the largest party of its kind in Europe.
