Paris Pantheon
The Paris Pantheon is a neoclassical monument on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, in the Latin Quarter. Built from 1758 onwards to a design by Jacques-Germain Soufflot, it was conceived as a church dedicated to Saint Genevieve and transformed during the Revolution into a mausoleum for great figures of France. Inside, highlights include the three-tiered dome, Ernest Hébert's mosaic in the apse, the cycle of paintings on the history of France by Puvis de Chavannes, Cabanel, Detaille and others, and Foucault's pendulum, whose replica has been installed there since 1995. The crypt holds the coffins of 75 men and 6 women, among them Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Émile Zola, Marie Curie, Simone Veil and Joséphine Baker. The building is managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and has been classified as a historic monument since 1920.
