The Wintergartenhochhaus is a 32-storey residential tower built between 1970 and 1972 in Leipzig-Mitte, in the Ostvorstadt, just north-east of the inner ring and diagonally opposite the central station. At 106.8 m total height and 95.5 m to the roof, it was the tallest residential building in the GDR and today ranks among the hundred tallest skyscrapers in Germany. Its symmetrical floor plan, with 16 outer corners and twelve loggias per floor, gives it an octagonal appearance, with a diameter of 32.4 m. It was the first high-rise residential building in the GDR built using the sliding-formwork method with a finished exterior skin; 2,038 tonnes of steel, 4,784 tonnes of cement and 12,000 m³ of concrete were used over 26 months, and because of difficult ground conditions, foundations had to be drilled to a depth of 50 m. On the roof, the 18-tonne rotating double-M advertising emblem of the Leipzig Trade Fair turns, renovated with LEDs in 2017. The building is protected as a cultural heritage site for its rarity value as a testament to modern East German architecture. After renovation in 2004–2005, the base now houses a three-storey retail area, and the building contains 29 one-room apartments, 78 two-room and 100 three-room apartments, plus offices; more than 95% of the homes have a balcony or loggia. The owner is the municipal housing company LWB. A pedestrian passage connects the building to the ring road.
