Nigatsu-dō
Nigatsu-dō is a sub-complex within Tōdai-ji temple, on the slope of Mount Wakakusa, east of the Great Buddha Hall. Its main hall, rebuilt in 1669 after a fire, is a National Treasure of Japan and houses two statues of Kannon classified as Hibutsu (secret Buddhas), which are therefore not shown to the public. The place is famous for the Shuni-e, a penitential service held annually from 1 to 15 March without interruption since the year 760, popularly known as Omizutori. In addition, on the 18th of each month a ceremony of about two hours is held, which visitors can listen to from a side hall. The hall's architecture, with its kakezukuri technique, and its wooded setting create a serene and spiritual atmosphere.
