Shōsōin
The Shōsōin is the treasure house of Tōdai-ji temple, located to the north-west of the Great Buddha Hall. It is an 8th-century building constructed in the azekura style, with triangular wooden beams joined without nails or screws and a floor raised about 2.5 metres to protect the objects from damp. Inside are preserved around 9,000 items, including Buddhist objects, clothing, furniture, musical instruments, weapons and more than 10,000 documents from the Tempyō era. Although the building is not open to the public, a selection of its treasures is exhibited every autumn at the Nara National Museum. The Shōsōin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Treasure of Japan, and is the only building that survived the Siege of Nara in the Heian period.
