Strasbourg Opera House
A neoclassical theatre on the place Broglie, designed by the architect Villot and built between 1804 and 1821. German bombardment in 1870 partly damaged it, and it was restored in 1888, when the rear façade gained a projecting circular section. The main façade has a large peristyle of Ionic columns crowned by six statues of Muses sculpted by Landolin Ohmacht; there are six, not the traditional nine. The façade has been protected as a historic monument since 1921. The auditorium seats 1,100 and is one of the two main venues of the Opéra national du Rhin, along with La Filature in Mulhouse. A thorough renovation is planned in the coming years. It looks superb from the square, which is surrounded by 19th-century buildings.
