Place de la République
The Place de la République is a large square plaza in Strasbourg, surrounded by five monumental buildings: the Palais du Rhin, the National and University Library, the Théâtre national de Strasbourg, the Prefecture and the Hôtel des impôts. In its centre is a circular garden with ginkgo biloba trees planted in the 1880s, a war memorial by Léon-Ernest Drivier (1936) and the sculpture Spirale Aby Warburg by Bert Theis (2002), which also serves as a bench. The square, designed by Jean-Geoffroy Conrath during the Reichsland period, connects the Grande Île with the Neustadt via the Pont du Théâtre. It is an ideal space for strolling and contemplating the historic architecture, with easy access by tram and bus.
