Constitution Bridge
The Ponte della Costituzione, also known as the Calatrava Bridge, crosses the Grand Canal linking Santa Lucia station with Piazzale Roma. It was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. It was put in place in July 2007 and opened to the public on the night of 11 September 2008. It is an arch bridge with a steel structure made up of a central arch, two side arches and two lower ones, with a main span of almost 80 metres. The parapet is made of tempered glass and the staircase alternates Istrian stone with glass steps. The project was controversial because of its contrast with Venice's medieval architecture, the slipperiness of the glass and the lack of wheelchair accessibility: the lift installed in 2010 was ordered to be removed. The glass steps are being replaced with trachyte.
