Church of San Sebastiano
San Sebastiano is Paolo Veronese's church in Venice: the painter decorated it between 1555 and 1570 and is buried in it, to the left of the presbytery. The building took its present form with the works of 1506 by Antonio Abbondi, known as Scarpagnino: a single nave, an atrium, a raised choir and a presbytery with an apse beneath a dome. Veronese painted the coffered ceiling with scenes from the Book of Esther (1555-1556), the organ doors with the Presentation in the Temple, the Washing of the Sacrificial Animals and the Nativity (1558-1559), the frescoes of the life of St Sebastian in the friars' choir and the altarpiece of the Virgin in Glory with St Sebastian and other saints (1565-1570). In the sacristy there are Old Testament paintings by Veronese himself and works by Tintoretto and Bonifacio de' Pitati. It is in the Dorsoduro district, in the square that bears its name.
