Highgate Cemetery
Highgate Cemetery is a 15-hectare historic cemetery in north London, opened in 1839. Designed by Stephen Geary, it is one of the city's 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries. The site combines dense woodland with paths, avenues and catacombs, and holds numerous mausoleums and graves in the Victorian neo-Gothic style with Egyptian influence. Its most notable features include the Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon, both Grade I listed structures. The cemetery is also known as the resting place of famous figures such as Karl Marx, George Michael, Michael Faraday and Lucian Freud. Its unique atmosphere and historical value make it a popular visitor attraction, managed by the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust.
