Pedro Luis Alonso Gardens
A historic garden of about 6,500 square metres on the eastern flank of Málaga Town Hall, between Avenida de Cervantes, Calle Roma and Calle Guillén Sotelo. It was designed by the architect Fernando Guerrero-Strachan Rosado as a Latin garden with a geometric layout, with Hispano-Muslim and French echoes, and opened around 1948 on plots that had been occupied by walls and a former barracks. It takes its name from Pedro Luis Alonso Jiménez, the city's first mayor after the Civil War. Along the paths there are orange trees, mandarin trees and rose bushes (a 2009 renovation replaced many cypresses with roses), as well as fountains and ponds. In the centre stands the statue of the biznaguero, the street seller of jasmine biznagas, the work of the sculptor Jaime Fernández Pimentel. From here you can see the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle in the distance, and the Town Hall stands right next door.
