Lagan Canal

CultureVisit: ~60 minFree

The Lagan Canal is a 44-kilometre waterway built to link Belfast with Lough Neagh, whose first stretch, a river navigation, connected Belfast with Lisburn. The route includes stretches of river navigation and sections built as canal, with locks such as the four at Union Locks and the flight of ten locks at Aghalee. The central stretch between Sprucefield and Moira was destroyed by the construction of the M1 motorway in the 1960s, while the section between Aghalee Bridge and Lough Neagh, with its last ten locks, passed into private ownership.
