Montecitorio Obelisk
CultureVisit: ~15 min
Red granite obelisk from Heliopolis, carved for Pharaoh Psamtik II (595-589 BC). Augustus brought it to Rome in 10 BC as the needle of a great sundial in the Campus Martius. It was found broken in 1748, re-erected in 1792 and stands in Piazza di Montecitorio, in front of the Parliament building. The paving now recreates the meridian line and the signs of the zodiac.
