A marble elephant carrying a small Egyptian obelisk, in front of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. It was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and unveiled in 1667; it was probably carved by his assistant Ercole Ferrata. The obelisk, of red granite and 5.47 m high, was erected around 580 BC by the pharaoh Apries at Sais and is the smallest of the thirteen ancient obelisks in Rome.
