Yakushi-ji
Yakushi-ji is an imperial Buddhist temple in Nara, seat of the Hossō school and a World Heritage Site. Its symmetrical design, with two main halls and two three-storey pagodas, is unique and is known as the 'Yakushiji style'. The East Pagoda, from the year 730, is the only original 8th-century structure that survives and is considered one of the finest in Japan. Inside, the Yakushi Triad, presided over by the Medicine Buddha, is one of the best-known icons of the country and an early example of the Tang style. The complex has been rebuilt after several fires, and today you can stroll around it admiring the architecture and the sculptures.
