Vari Cave

CultureVisit: ~120 minFree

Vari Cave, situated near the top of one of the southern spurs of Mount Hymettus, offers visitors a look at an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, Pan and the Nymphs, used from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD. On entering, steps carved into the rock lead down to a landing from which two chambers, separated by a large rock partition, can be seen; the main chamber holds a sanctuary to Pan that imitates a temple façade, with figures carved directly into the stone, though damaged by time. In the lower part of the cave, visitors can see a rock-cut sanctuary dedicated to Apollo Hersus and the image of Archedemus, shown as a stonemason with his tools. The cave is noted for its rock-carved sculptures, unique in Greece, and for its history as a site of worship, both pagan and, possibly, Christian in later periods.
