Odaiba
LeisureVisit: ~180 min
An artificial island in Tokyo Bay. Its name comes from the cannon batteries (“daiba”) built here in 1853 to defend the city after the arrival of Commodore Perry's ships; in the 1990s it was developed as a leisure area. You get there by crossing the Rainbow Bridge, often on the Yurikamome, an elevated driverless train. On its waterfront there is a replica of the Statue of Liberty with the bridge behind it, an urban beach, shopping centres, the Fuji TV building with its sphere and a life-size Gundam robot statue. It looks its best at sunset, when the bridge is lit up.
