Orive Gardens
The Jardines de Orive are a public park in the heart of Córdoba's historic centre, opened in 2004. They bring together the grounds of the Orive palace, or Palacio de los Villalones, built around 1560 by Hernán Ruiz II, and the old orchards of the convent of San Pablo; the land is protected as a historic garden. Excavations have uncovered remains of the city's Roman circus and a group of Islamic houses from the Almohad period with geometric decoration on the walls. Within the grounds is the Sala Orive, the convent's former chapter house, designed by Hernán Ruiz II and left unfinished; it was restored in the early 21st century as an exhibition hall. Among the vegetation are an old coral tree and a jacaranda nearly twenty metres tall. The garden lies next to the church of San Pablo and Calle Capitulares.
