Plaza de la Corredera
Plaza de la Corredera is an arcaded main square with a rectangular plan, about 113 by 55 metres. It was built between 1683 and 1687 at the behest of the corregidor Francisco Ronquillo Briceño, to a design by the Salamanca architect Antonio Ramos Valdés. For lack of funds only the façades were built, and the owners of the houses bought the lengths of façade they wanted for their balconies. Its name comes from the bullfights once held there. On the south side stands the building now turned into the Sánchez Peña market, which was a prison and the corregidor's house and was built between 1583 and 1586. In the 19th century it was a hat factory and later a food market. In the late 1950s, when the market that occupied the centre of the square was demolished, Roman mosaics were found, which can now be seen in the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos.
