Strand Cinema
The Strand Cinema is an independent four-screen cinema on Holywood Road, in east Belfast. Opened in 1935, its moderne design, with curved walls and a porthole-lined foyer, was influenced by the nearby Harland & Wolff shipyard. It is one of only two independent cinemas left in the city and the only surviving operating cinema in Northern Ireland out of the 40 that once existed. It has hosted the Belfast Film Festival, screening classic films, and in 2005 marked its 70th anniversary with a screening of 'A Night to Remember', about the sinking of the Titanic. Following a refurbishment, it won a RIBA architecture award. In 2023 a restoration and extension, including a museum, was announced, funded by the UK lottery. It has also been praised as one of the cheapest cinemas in Belfast.
