Air Tower
The Torre del Aire, also known as the Palace of Fermoselle or of the Four Towers, is what remains of a 15th-century fortified house built around 1440 by the Castillo family, lords of Fermoselle and Santa María del Campo. The tower served to defend the house and to show the rank of its owners. Square in plan and slender in profile, it is built of well-squared ashlar and its Italianate silhouette recalls the towers of cities such as San Gimignano. Its windows are twin-light, with Gothic tracery, and are irregularly distributed across the walls. In the 18th century it was a cloth factory; in 1818 it temporarily housed Irish students. It stands next to Plaza de Santa Eulalia and became much more visible in 1953, when houses were demolished to open the Gran Vía. It cannot be visited inside: it is seen from the street.
