Los Almendros Concentration Camp

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

In the La Goteta area, beside the old Valencia road (now Avenida de Denia), a marker recalls the site of the provisional concentration camp that the rebel side set up at the end of March 1939. The enclosure, about 200 by 80 metres and fenced with barbed wire by Italian soldiers of the Littorio division, held Republican soldiers and civilians, many of them from the port of Alicante. Today the site is recognised by the municipal park 'Campo de los Almendros', opened in 2012, and a memorial opened in 2014, which let visitors approach this page of the city's historical memory.
