Santa Bárbara Castle
The castle rises on Mount Benacantil, 167 metres above sea level beside the Mediterranean, and from it you command the whole bay of Alicante. The route passes through three enclosures from different periods: the highest, La Torreta, preserves the old keep and foundations from the 11th to 13th centuries; the middle one gathers buildings completed in 1580 around the Parade Ground, with the Philip II Hall and the ruins of the Hermitage of Santa Bárbara; and the lowest, from the 18th century, includes the Revellín del Bon Repós. Inside is the Museum of the City of Alicante (MUSA), with five rooms and a Renaissance cistern. You can go up in two lifts that rise through the inside of the mountain, and there are guided tours and catering at the top and nearby.
