Aqueduct of Segovia
The aqueduct crosses Segovia with an arcade of 167 arches of granite blocks laid without mortar, reaching 28 metres in height at its highest point above Plaza del Azoguejo. The structure is organised in two tiers of arches on pillars and preserves at the top two niches, one on each side, where images of the Virgen del Carmen and Saint Sebastian were placed. Its original course carried water from springs about 17 kilometres from the city and remained in use until 1973. Beside the monument, on Cuesta de San Juan, stands a modern statue of a devil evoking the popular legend about its construction.
