Magdalena Palace
On the Magdalena peninsula, a public peri-urban park between El Sardinero and the city centre, stands this eclectic-style palace built between 1909 and 1911 as the summer residence of Alfonso XIII. The building combines English and French influences and the Baroque architecture of the Cantabrian mountains, with two entrances (one on the north side for carriages and the main one on the south, with two octagonal towers and a double-flight staircase) and slate roofs. Inside, the reception rooms hold paintings by Benedito, Sorolla and Sotomayor. Next to the beach, the Royal Stables of 1914 imitate a medieval English village with pointed roofs and timber framing. The surrounding peninsula offers wooded vegetation, two beaches (Los Bikinis and La Magdalena), a mini zoo and a children's playground.
