Rocky, fairly flat island of 1.7 hectares off the Magdalena peninsula, at the mouth of Santander Bay, with a 19th-century lighthouse on one of its highest parts. It is not open to the public, so it is viewed from the coast or from the water. Its surroundings have been a marine reserve since 1986 and hold more than 39 species of fish among crevices, small caves and rock walls, making it popular with divers and underwater photographers. Herring gulls and European storm petrels nest on the island, and its flora includes tree mallow and sea fennel.
