Plaza de Zocodover
Plaza de Zocodover is the historic heart of Toledo's old town. Its name comes from Arabic and refers to the market for pack animals held here, and over the centuries it has been the setting for markets, bullfights, popular festivities and also autos-da-fé and public executions. Part of its layout was designed by Juan de Herrera under Philip II, and after the fire of 1589 a new square was built; in the 19th century its reorganisation as a rectangular arcaded square was planned. Today it is a busy space that hosts events and celebrations and serves as a usual meeting point for locals and a thoroughfare for the many visitors touring the historic centre.
