Alcántara Bridge

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

The Alcántara Bridge crosses the River Tagus at the foot of San Servando Castle, next to the Alcántara Gate. Its origins go back to the Roman founding of Toletum, and it was rebuilt after suffering damage in the 10th century, when a third arch disappeared and was reduced to a small opening with a horseshoe arch. Today it keeps two arches and two pairs of refuges, one over the buttresses of the river arch and another formed by rectangular cantilevered recesses. At the western end stands a medieval tower decorated with the arms of the Catholic Monarchs, while the eastern tower was replaced in 1721 by a Baroque triumphal arch. It was one of the historic entrances to Toledo and a compulsory point of entry for pilgrims in the Middle Ages.
