The Pereda Gardens are a public park in central Santander, created in 1905 on land reclaimed from the sea that used to serve as a harbour quay. The promenade covers 48,000 m² with more than two hundred trees —magnolias, hollies, palms, cedars, horse chestnuts, pines, yews, lindens and flowering apple trees— that shelter thousands of starlings between September and March. In the garden stands the monument to José María de Pereda, by Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, whose bust is surrounded by engravings of scenes from the Cantabrian writer's novels. A redesign by the landscape architect Fernando Caruncho, completed in 2014, expanded the green and seating areas by putting part of the Paseo's traffic underground. The site forms part of the historic-artistic ensemble of Paseo de Pereda and Calle Castelar, declared in 1985, and lies next to the seafront promenade and the Centro Botín.
