Stone Crane
Beside Santander's seafront promenade stands this port crane, inaugurated in 1900, which for almost a century was used to load and unload merchant ships. Its steel structure, weighing 48 tonnes excluding the base, rests on ashlar blocks from the old quays; the jib rises 14 metres and the hook cable reaches 23 metres, with 34-tonne counterweights. It was designed to move loads of 30 tonnes and in tests it lifted 36. It remained in service until the early 1990s and, after the counterweights fell off in 2016, it was dismantled and reinaugurated in 2017. Its preservation on the original site was due to public pressure during the construction of the Centro Botín.
